How The System Works

Toyota/Lexus EFI operation depends on ECU power and grounds, engine-speed and position signals, measured air, temperature and throttle inputs, fuel delivery, ignition and injector control. During cranking the ECU must first recognize engine rotation and satisfy its authorization strategy before it can coordinate spark and injection.

A swap no-start or poor-running complaint should be divided into mechanical condition, ECU communication and inputs, ignition, injection, fuel supply and air path. Proving these foundations in order prevents a missing injector pulse, low fuel pressure or misleading code from being mistaken for an ECU failure.

Step By Step Test Procedure

Confirm the matched system

  • Verify battery and mechanical condition and that the ECU, harness, security components and throttle parts belong to the intended donor system.

Establish ECU communication

  • Record codes and confirm cranking speed, temperature and throttle data are plausible.

Load-test the foundation

  • Verify ECU feeds, grounds and EFI or main-relay outputs during cranking or the failed operating condition.

Check ignition and injection

  • Use approved equipment to confirm ignition output plus injector feed and pulse.

Prove fuel and metered air

  • Measure fuel pressure and delivery against the exact donor specification, then inspect the metered-air path for restriction or leakage.

Isolate and confirm

  • Use the results to identify the failed subsystem, repair it and repeat the start, idle and operating test before clearing evidence.

Expected Readings And What They Mean

CheckExpected EvidenceDiagnostic Meaning
ECU communication and engine-speed recognitionECU communicates and reports plausible engine rotation during crankingNo speed recognition directs testing toward crank or cam signals, wiring or mechanical timing.
ECU and EFI-relay foundationRequired feeds, relay outputs and grounds remain stable during cranking and runningA lost loaded supply can remove spark and injection together.
Ignition and injection enableSpark and injector control occur when synchronization and authorization conditions are satisfiedBoth missing suggests an enable, synchronization, security or ECU-foundation fault.
Air and fuel foundationMeasured-air data is plausible and fuel delivery meets the donor-system procedureThis separates intake or fuel-supply problems from ECU-command faults.
