Lexus V8 Engines LLC offers OEM Toyota/Lexus V8 engine harness rebuild services where the original factory harness is stripped down, cleaned, repaired, rebuilt, and reconfigured into a standalone-style system for engine swaps.

This service is different from building a completely new harness. With an OEM rebuild, we use the original Toyota/Lexus engine harness as the foundation, then completely go through it and modify it so the engine and ECU can operate outside of the original donor vehicle.

This is a very good option when the customer already has the original engine harness and wants to retain the factory Toyota/Lexus ECU system, factory sensors, factory throttle system, and OEM reliability.

What is included

What an OEM harness rebuild includes

With an OEM harness rebuild, we do not simply shorten a few wires and tape the harness back together.

The harness goes through a very intensive rebuild process. All original wrapping, tape, conduit, and outer coverings are removed. The harness is then thoroughly washed and cleaned so we can properly inspect the wiring, connectors, branch points, and any areas that may have been damaged by age, heat, oil, or previous repairs.

All engine-side connectors are removed from the harness. The terminals and seals are removed and replaced with new fresh terminals and seals. Connectors that are still in good condition can be reused, but any connector that looks suspect, brittle, damaged, heat affected, cracked, deteriorated, or unreliable is replaced with a new connector.

This is not a quick cosmetic rewrap. The harness is fully inspected and rebuilt so it becomes a proper part to install onto the engine.

Depending on the condition and application, this can include:

  • Removal of old loom, tape, conduit, and coverings
  • Intensive washing and cleaning process
  • Inspection of the full harness
  • Removal of engine-side connectors
  • Replacement of engine-side terminals and seals

After the wiring has been repaired and reconfigured, the harness branches and outlets are finished with woven tubing. The harness can also be stiffened with a stainless steel skeleton where needed so the harness holds its shape and routes cleanly around the engine.

Brackets are installed where required so the harness fits the engine properly. The goal is for the harness to fit the engine like a glove instead of being a loose, floppy harness that can rub against brackets, engine parts, exhaust heat, or moving components.

A properly rebuilt harness should feel like a finished engine component, not an afterthought. It should install cleanly, route neatly, and reduce the chance of future wiring problems caused by rubbing, movement, heat, or poor routing.

Many Toyota/Lexus V8 harnesses are now old enough that the insulation, connectors, seals, and terminals may be brittle, corroded, heat damaged, oil soaked, or previously modified.

Even if an engine runs before removal, the harness can start falling apart once it is moved, unplugged, or installed into a new vehicle.

An OEM harness rebuild allows the original harness to be brought back to life while still retaining the benefits of the Toyota/Lexus factory ECU system.

The finished harness is cleaner, more reliable, easier to install, and much easier to diagnose than a used, brittle, unmodified donor harness.

This is not a universal plug-and-play chassis harness. The installer still needs to connect the labeled vehicle-side wires into the recipient vehicle correctly.

1UZ-FE VVTi

1UZ-FE VVTi OEM harness rebuild

The 1UZ-FE VVTi is a very good engine, but it has some important limitations compared with later 2UZ and 3UZ systems.

The 1UZ VVTi can be rebuilt into a standalone-style system using the original OEM harness and ECU, but customers need to understand the ECU limitations before choosing this platform.

1UZ VVTi Manual Configuration

A 1UZ VVTi can be wired to run in a manual swap application. The OEM harness can be rebuilt and reconfigured into a standalone-style engine harness.

Cons

  • The 1UZ VVTi ECU is not programmable in the same way as later 2UZ and 3UZ ECUs
  • Transmission-related codes cannot simply be flashed out like on later platforms
  • Manual conversions may still have automatic transmission-related fault codes depending on ECU and configuration
  • Immobilizer removal is normally possible, but full calibration editing is limited
  • Not as flexible as 2UZ/3UZ for DTC deletion, manual setup, or performance tuning

On 1UZ VVTi systems, we can wire the engine to run properly in a manual application, but customers need to understand that the ECU itself has limitations. This is not the same as a 3UZ or later 2UZ ECU where we can usually go in and configure the ECU more completely for the swap.

1UZ VVTi Automatic Configuration

A 1UZ VVTi automatic setup can be supported when the customer is retaining the correct matching Toyota/Lexus automatic transmission and ECU system.

This is normally more straightforward than trying to convert the ECU to a manual configuration because the ECU is still seeing the automatic transmission system it was designed to control.

  • Keeps the original engine/transmission control strategy
  • Good drivability when the matching transmission is retained
  • Factory ECU can continue to control the engine and automatic transmission as intended
  • Good option for customers wanting an OEM-style automatic swap

Cons

  • Requires the correct matching transmission, ECU, and wiring strategy

  • Transmission wiring, park/neutral input, gear position, and speed signals must be correct

2UZ-FE non-VVTi

2UZ-FE non-VVTi OEM harness rebuild

The non-VVTi 2UZ is one of the best engines for truck, 4x4, Land Cruiser, Hilux, Tacoma, 4Runner, and off-road applications. It has excellent torque and is well suited to heavier vehicles.

There are several different non-VVTi 2UZ wiring and throttle system versions, so the exact setup must be identified before building the harness.

Common Non-VVTi 2UZ Variants

Early 2UZ systems use electronic throttle control but still have a physical cable going to the throttle body. The accelerator position sensor is built into the throttle body assembly.

Later non-VVTi systems use a full electronic accelerator pedal where the pedal contains the accelerator position sensor.

There are also ECU and transmission differences between early Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, and later 5-speed applications.

The important part is that the throttle body, ECU, accelerator pedal or accelerator position system, and harness strategy must all match.

2UZ Non-VVTi Manual Configuration

A non-VVTi 2UZ can be set up very well for manual transmission swaps. Common manual transmissions include R150F, R151F, H-series, R-series, and other adapter-based manual setups.

In a manual configuration, the ECU runs the engine only. The manual transmission is mechanically separate from the ECU.

ECU Notes

Some early 2UZ ECUs, especially certain Land Cruiser and first-generation Tundra ECUs, are not flashable in the way we need for some swap configurations. When required, we can replace the ECU with a suitable programmable Sequoia ECU and wire/program the system to suit.

The important thing is not the story behind the ECU. The important thing is that the customer receives a working system.

2UZ VVTi Manual Configuration

A 2UZ VVTi can be used in a manual transmission swap, but the ECU and wiring need to be set up correctly.

In a manual setup, the ECU runs the engine only. The manual transmission remains separate.

The 3UZ is very popular in drift cars, Toyota pickups, 4Runners, Hilux, Altezzas, classic cars, Mercedes swaps, and other custom builds.

3UZ Manual Configuration

The 3UZ works very well in manual transmission applications.
