1UZ VVTi Manual Configuration
A 1UZ VVTi can be wired to run in a manual swap application. The OEM harness can be rebuilt and reconfigured into a standalone-style engine harness.
Typical manual swap connections include:
- Ignition power
- Start signal
- Fuel pump control
- OBD2 diagnostic port
- Tach output
- Check engine light
- Charge light
- Oil light
- Coolant temperature signal
- A/C request if required
Pros
- Strong, smooth, reliable VVTi engine
- Good power and response for many swaps
- Factory ECU runs the engine very well when wired correctly
- Good option where the customer already has a complete donor harness and ECU
- OEM reliability when the wiring is rebuilt properly
Cons
- The 1UZ VVTi ECU is not programmable in the same way as later 2UZ and 3UZ ECUs
- Transmission-related codes cannot simply be flashed out like on later platforms
- Manual conversions may still have automatic transmission-related fault codes depending on ECU and configuration
- Immobilizer removal is normally possible, but full calibration editing is limited
- Not as flexible as 2UZ/3UZ for DTC deletion, manual setup, or performance tuning
On 1UZ VVTi systems, we can wire the engine to run properly in a manual application, but customers need to understand that the ECU itself has limitations. This is not the same as a 3UZ or later 2UZ ECU where we can usually go in and configure the ECU more completely for the swap.
