Classify the device
- Confirm the exact donor component and determine whether it is a sensor or actuator before choosing a test method.
Sensor and actuator training for input signals, ECU decisions, output commands, load testing, and fault separation.
Sensors convert temperature, position, pressure or rotation into a signal the ECU can interpret. Depending on the device, that signal may be resistance, voltage, frequency or a digital message. Some sensors share a reference or sensor-ground branch, so one shorted sensor or mis-pinned swap connector can disturb several readings.
Actuators convert ECU commands into physical work through relays, solenoids, injectors or motors. They may have a common power feed with ECU-switched control, or a more complex multi-wire driver. Accurate diagnosis separately proves the input value, harness path, ECU command and actuator response.
| Check | Expected Evidence | Diagnostic Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor supply and ground | Supply and ground match the exact circuit design and remain stable with the sensor connected | A shared supply or ground fault can disturb several sensors simultaneously. |
| Sensor response | Signal changes smoothly and plausibly as the measured condition changes | Fixed, erratic or implausible response indicates sensor, connector or signal-wire trouble. |
| Actuator feed and control | The actuator receives its specified feed and an ECU control signal when commanded | Missing feed is a supply fault; feed without control requires command, wiring and driver checks. |
| Commanded versus actual response | The actuator performs the expected physical action during an approved active or operating test | Correct electrical command without movement indicates an actuator or mechanical problem. |
