Shift interlock diagnosis for brake switch input, key interlock, solenoid operation, power feed, ground path, and mechanical lock release.
The shift interlock keeps an automatic selector in Park until the required ignition and brake conditions are present. Depending on the donor system, a brake-switch circuit and interlock controller or body module energizes a solenoid that releases a mechanical latch. The stop-lamp and interlock portions of the brake switch may not be the same circuit.
In a swap, altered ignition feeds, brake wiring, grounds, console wiring or a mismatched shifter can prevent release. A working brake lamp does not prove that the controller sees the correct input, and a commanded solenoid cannot release a binding latch or cable.
| Check | Expected Evidence | Diagnostic Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Brake-switch or interlock input | The interlock-specific brake signal changes correctly when the pedal is pressed | Working stop lamps do not rule out a failed second brake-switch circuit or wiring branch. |
| Solenoid feed and control | Feed and control appear only when specified ignition and brake conditions are satisfied | Missing feed or command directs testing toward fuse, ignition, brake input, controller or wiring. |
| Solenoid operation | Coil and current behaviour meet the shifter specification and the solenoid moves when commanded | Correct command without movement indicates a failed solenoid, poor ground or mechanical restriction. |
| Lock and release behaviour | Selector stays locked when release conditions are absent and releases repeatedly when present | Intermittent or incomplete release indicates latch, cable, alignment or connector trouble. |
