Choosing the right Toyota or Lexus engine for your swap

Every swap starts with the engine family, but the right wiring plan depends on the donor ECU, immobilizer/security system, transmission, throttle type, emissions equipment, and the vehicle it is going into. Lexus V8 Engines LLC wires UZ, GR, and UR engine platforms, then builds the harness and ECU solution around the customer project rather than treating every swap the same.

UZ series V8

1UZ, 2UZ, and 3UZ swap platforms

The UZ family is the classic Toyota and Lexus V8 swap platform. It is a good fit when the customer wants strong OEM reliability, proven standalone wiring support, and a large amount of swap knowledge already behind the engine.

  • Common engines: 1UZ-FE 4.0L, 2UZ-FE 4.7L, and 3UZ-FE 4.3L.
  • Typical donors: Lexus LS, SC, GS, LX and Toyota Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia platforms depending on year and market.
  • Best fit: restorations, off-road builds, compact truck swaps, Land Cruiser projects, street cars, and custom conversions that need a proven Toyota V8.
  • Wiring focus: standalone harness conversion, ECU programming where supported, immobilizer delete, automatic or manual conversion planning, and clean client plug layouts.

1UZ non-VVT is not a supported wiring platform. Current UZ support is focused on supported VVT-i engine packages, with ECU and harness requirements confirmed before the job is accepted.

GR series V6

1GR and 2GR engine swap platforms

The GR family gives customers a lighter V6 option with modern Toyota reliability. It can be a smart choice where packaging, weight, and vehicle balance matter more than simply fitting the biggest V8 possible.

  • Common engines: 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 and 2GR 3.5L variants including FE, FSE, and FKS depending on donor.
  • Typical donors: Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Prado, Tundra V6, Lexus IS, GS, RX, RC, and other Toyota/Lexus platforms depending on engine code.
  • Best fit: lighter swaps, trail vehicles, daily-driven conversions, and projects where the customer wants Toyota power without the weight or packaging of a V8.
  • Wiring focus: correct ECU and immobilizer matching, electronic throttle, transmission communication, CAN wiring, fuel system type, and chassis integration.

We wire GR series engines, but the exact plan depends heavily on the specific engine code, ECU, transmission, and donor vehicle electronics.

UR series V8

1UR, 2UR, and 3UR modern V8 platforms

The UR family is the newer Toyota and Lexus V8 platform that replaced the UZ series. These engines can deliver more modern power and drivability, but they usually bring more wiring, security, fuel system, and transmission complexity.

  • Common engines: 1UR 4.6L, 2UR 5.0L, and 3UR 5.7L variants.
  • Typical donors: Lexus LS, GS, IS F, RC F, LC 500, GX 460, Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, and related platforms depending on engine code.
  • Best fit: high-end Toyota/Lexus swaps, truck and off-road builds needing modern V8 torque, and performance projects where the extra wiring complexity is acceptable.
  • Wiring focus: ECU/security matching, CAN communication, electronic throttle, transmission strategy, D-4S/direct-injection considerations, and accessory integration.

We wire UR series engines, but UR projects should be planned from the donor package forward because ECU, immobilizer, transmission, and fuel-system requirements vary widely.
